Kneading for Territorial Reasons

Cats are very territorial, and kneading with their paws leaves their scent on their belongings. This includes you, too. Cats activate the scent glands in the pads of their paws to mark things or people by kneading.

Female cats sometimes knead their paws before they go into heat. This is a display for male cats that they are available and ready to mate.

Kneading Is Instinctive

Kneading is instinctive, even after a cat is no longer nursing from her mother. Adult cats who knead may be doing it to:

Calm themselves when stressed

Show contentment

Mark their human with their scent

Mark objects with their scent
